This short length of WAA-controlled canal offers decent mixed fishing. The canal is quite near the junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal, and hence pulls when the locks are opened. The result is a quite coloured canal that offers good fishing all year round.

The canal is approx. 10-11m wide. The far shelf can be very shallow in places. Best fishing is down the track, although the far shelf can produce where there is are holding features (reeds, moored boat, etc). There are plenty of roach, bream, gudgeon, perch, ruffe and eels present. The area is also noted for a few carp into double figures, and tench are also caught regularly along this length.

This length has recently been renovated, and thankfully, British Waterways have utilised coir rolls to reinforce the far bank, as opposed to the usual sheet piling. This has resulted in an improved habitat for fish, with marginal reeds and grasses offering cover. There are usually some boats moored up by the old bridge (88). The towpath is quite wide with a verge that allows plenty of room for the angler. Please be careful about shipping your pole back into people’s gardens.

Location
This is a short length (approx. 500m) of the Macclesfield Canal, at Scholar Green between Bridges 97 and 89. 
It is 2 miles south of Congleton, and 1.5 miles north of the junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal at Church Lawton / Kidsgrove.

Parking
Park either in Cinderhill Lane (See the map) or at the Rising Sun pub next to bridge 87. Please park sensibly and do not block in residents in Cinderhill Lane.

Please be aware that there are low-level power cables at some of the properties backing onto the canal.
