This popular stretch of the River Mersey stretches from Kingsway Bridge, downstream to Howley Weir and comprises approximately 40 pegs, with a couple of gaps due to overhead powerlines and the Howley suspension footbridge.Fishing is on the left bank and this is a good stretch of river in terms of fish stocks. Matches have been fished here for several years, and during that time, the average catches have steadily increased.Roach, bream, gudgeon, perch and chub make the most of the catches, although there are also dace, eels, pike and a few carp present.The river is wide here (50m+) and there is a variety of depths, averaging around 14 feet, which suits a variety of methods. Depending on the the flow, these pegs can be fished using tip, pole, waggler or stick float. Maggot and caster are the most popular baits.Parking is either at Weir Lane, where parking is available behind some of the swims. There is a large free public carpark on Victoria Park, where access to the river bank is gained alongside the allotments behind the sports stadium.
